What is a broker?

A broker is an intermediary between an investor and the stock exchange. This can be either a person or a company. As an investor, you give your buy and sell orders to the broker, who then executes them for a fee.

The execution of orders nowadays almost all happens digitally via online trading platforms of the brokers. This can be done in all sorts of different markets and investment products such as: shares, commodities, currencies, mutual funds, etf’s, options, indexes and more.

What does a broker cost?

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. A broker also wants to make money. However, some brokers take the latter very seriously and charge very high fees for the execution of orders. Very inconvenient for you, because the broker fees are deducted from your net return.

That’s why it makes sense to compare the broker fees. After all, live and let live, but nobody wants to overpay. Below, we set out an example of the actual fees of different brokers. This gives you immediate insight into what it costs to invest. In the example, we assume standard Euronext stocks (e.g. AEX, KLM, Shell, Heineken, Ahold, etc)

Investing with a bank or online broker?

To invest, you need a bank or broker. You can go to one of the big banks such as Rabobank, ING and ABN AMRO. If you are looking for a specialist investment bank, you can think of well-known online brokers such as Fineco, Degiro, eToro or Freedom Finance. Some major advantages of investing with a broker are: the wide range of analysis and trading possibilities, more control and flexibility, the speed and also, the fees are much lower than for the big banks.

What is the best broker?

The best broker is different for each person. Each broker has its own characteristics and specialties. We ourselves are most enthusiastic about Fineco, DEGIRO & eToro, all very strong and cheap all-round brokers with everything you need to build your investment portfolio.

Why invest using a broker?

  • Brokers are specialist investment platforms
  • Lower costs than the traditional big banks
  • Extensive range of investment products
  • Extensive analysis and trading possibilities
  • Trade directly from your desktop or mobile
  • 24/7 online insight into your portfolio via app and platform
